The unknown connection

There was a childhood story which goes like this..

A king used to stand in his big balcony of his palace every morning and evening and watch people on the streets. He used to see a poor man going to the jungle every morning and return back with some pieces of wood on his head every evening. King used to feel for that man. Some days goes by and then the king started getting a very negative feeling like anger while he sees that man then on. He got disturbed about this and called his minister to discuss this. Minister went to the poor mans house in disguise one day and found nothing unusual. Then he saw a room locked in his house and asked the poor man “What is in that room?”. The poor man explained unaware that he is talking to the minister. “See this room is full of dry sandal woods. I have kept it for my retirement. One day the old king would die and I would sell all these sandal woods for his rituals that day at a very high price. Then on I need not work for my living”.

Minister got the answer to the king’s question.

How many times we have felt negative vibes from some people even if we think there is no reason why. Similarly when we meet some we feel some unknown past connection..So lets watch our feelings for others. They travel even in ether and they talk to each other even if we are silent.

Material Enjoyment

Had a weekend official travel outside the city. Thats followed by 3 long days of brain storming for next business year. Lunch and dinner included part of the meeting. Then fly back with a lot of action items in mind for myself and my team. 2 more days left in the week went in catching up of the backlogs. Then came the long weekend. I told to myself and a few friends – “We need or rather deserve a break”. What else? Plans were made. We drove down to a near by forest with 6 more friends and thier families. The write up is not about that trip. So cutting it short, we enjoyed there, drove back. While going to bed at 1am in the night, I told myself that a day was well spent and I was also excited about the next day color festival we celebrate in this part of the world. That went well too. That day evening, I was completely drained out with lack of serious vital energy. I knew I had to get back to work next day.

This is not the first time I am getting that feeling and wisdom. Question remains – Am I recharged to go back to work with new rigor? What this break gave me? Seen a new place, did some activities to tire myself physically, met some new people and hopefully stregthened ties with the older ones. But with all that, internally I am back to square one.

Not sure if the point is made. Let me summerize with a quote from the great Ramana Maharshi,” The thought of enjoyment also comes with sorrow as it takes you away from your true self”. That’s what I was experiencing.

I locked myself for 3-4 hrs to get some solitude so that I get my vatal energies and mental calm back.

Thinking about the concept of so called break.

Life is full of mistakes

What is the source of learning? And why we all try to learn at all? Somewhere inside us we feel we will be better or we can make our sorrounding better by learning and applying something new. Which indirectly means there is something better exists – better feelings, better situation, better self etc etc. So LEARN.

We also have heard “We should learn from our mistakes and if possible from others.” So learning involves a process of making mistakes. Oh yes we sometimes get inspired too and learn. But what inspiration means? We found a better way than we know of and we tend to adopt. If there was a better way and we were not aware of that – mistake!!?

So relax – life is a joyrney from one mistake to another. Life is full of mistakes. Keep making them till you learn to do another mistake may be a more siphosticated one.

PEACE WITH SELF…

Where is the focus!

History has witnessed many great organizations at one or many points in time struggle, loose brand values, employee loyalty, investors’ confidence. Recent examples being Infosys,Apple,Microsoft or Nokia (click on links to see news items around the same). All of them are struggling to break their own records of the past or even maintain the past glory amongst all stakeholders.

What goes wrong? Are all the reasons economic –what lies below the layer of financial outcomes? I remember during our young times there was a book named “Rich Dad Poor Dad” which got very popular amongst youngsters in India which brought back the focus of the students to “Money making” and highlighted a shaking question that “If all that we do in life is to make money why don’t we learn that in the very first place? Why we are not being taught that in schools/colleges?”

Now if that is true then are all the these great organizations forgot what money making means or the how part of it? Then what is the issue?

The answer lies in the “means” of money making. Also in the question where is the focus? A service company makes money by rendering a service of good quality and with true service mentality. A product company makes money by bringing in to its customers with new, innovative, mind tickling products. So what comes first –making money or rendering a world class service or surprising with innovative products? I think it needs no intelligence to decide on the right answer. Money is always a byproduct. It’s the work the organizations do make is the core and they have to constantly improve on the same to make the money flow in.

Money, any organization makes is the simplest indicator of how good/bad the organization is doing –especially between the investors. But the indicator can’t be the focus of the company. They should feel good when the make it and feel bad when they don’t but they should not lose sight of the core which is their service or the product. They should be constantly worrying about how to improvise it, be relevant in the service and product with changing times. If the focus shifts from this to the money side of the story, they lose both.

If we observe at the activity level, both the surgeon and a murderer perform the same activity with a piece of knife BUT the intents are different AND so are the results.
